2019 Convention:1,726 delegates cast votes to pick SDP Presidential Candidate

No fewer than 1,726 accredited delegates converged today, Saturday at the Old Parade Ground, Area 10, Garki, Abuja venue of the National Convention of the Social Democratic Party (SDP),from across the 36 states of the country and the Federal Capital Territory(FCT) to elect the presidential candidate of the party in the 2019 general elections.

Speaking in an opening address, Chairman of the Party , Chief Olu Falae stated that it was time Nigerians put an end to politics of cash and carry in the interest of the coming generations.

The five aspirations jostling for the Party’s ticket at the Convention taking place at the old Parade Ground, Abuja are, Professor Jerry Gana, a one time Minister of Information, Mr John Dara, a one time aide to General T Y Danjuma, Former Cross State Governor, Donald Duke, Prof. Iyorwuese Hagler, a former Ambassador and Ambassador Fidelis Osakwe.

While declaring open the National Convention, Falae, said it was high time for Nigerians to halt disgraceful spread of political monetisation and returned to politics where welfare of the people would be central theme of social democracy.

Falae, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation lamented that Nigerians have continued to watch helplessly while those they elected into offices demonstrated on a daily basis ineffective and incompetent leadership.

He noted that this has engendered social and food insecurity, lawlessness, impunity, insurgency, widespread corruption, nepotism and poverty.

“Nigerians watch helplessly how ethnic and religious divisions reach a magnitude that threatens the very foundation of our nationhood

“But, it is now time to halt such a dangerous march towards national collapse. We must return to politics where welfare of the people is central theme of social democracy

“We must return to the stage where emphasis is on party manifesto, integrity, performance and service to the nation. We must halt the disgraceful spread of political monetisation in our country,” he said.

The SDP National Chairman said Nigeria needed urgently to be rescued now as the “so-called major parties” which had ruled Nigeria for nearly 20 years had failed the country in all ramifications saying that the SDP was prepared and ready for the rescue mission.

“We are proud of our history and credibility. Our party’s policies are rooted in social justice and are people-driven, people-focused and designed to bring development and prosperity to the people

“Our party recognizes that the dignity of the human person and the sanctity of life are non-negotiable, as a political party, we are determined to work with the Nigerian people to ensure emergence of a new, credible and stable political process, engineered to harvest the beauty of democracy, offer good governance, and produce genuine development,” he added.

He further stated that SDP was built on the solid ideology of Social Democracy; anchored on social justice, human dignity, fairness, equity and inclusiveness.

“Our party’s ideology includes a shared prosperity with the imperative of democracy; and the security of peace with justice.

“The philosophy of Social Democracy places a great premium on the dignity of the human person and the sanctity of human life,” said the SDP National Chairman.

According to him, the arms of the SDP are always open to welcome Nigerians who share the social justice ideals of Abia House of Assembly of or wish to be bound by them.

“We need them to join us to rescue and rebuild Nigeria,” he said.

In his address, the Chairman of the National Convention Committee, Professor Tunde Adeniran stated that the well packaged Convention would be conducted in the highest standard which would further strength the unity of the Party and as well promoted its consolidation .

He said the Convention was to affirm the faith of party members in the Nigeria nation and to prepare the party to take it back from a leadership that was visionless.

“We must prepare grounds for the emergence of a visionary leadership and true statesmen leaders to drive our nation’s development agenda,” said Adeniran.

Meanwhile, the aspirants who spoke one after the other promised to abide by its out come and expressed their reediness to rescue the nation from its ruins if elected the President come next year.

The Convention also ratified the election of the National Executive Officers of the party and as well ratified its Construction , new Logo among others.

The voting by the 40 delegates each from all the state’s in the country and the FCT is in progress to elect the party’s presidential candidate.
