I am not driven by selfish interest, says Jerry Gana as he declares for presidency

Former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, on Thursday, declared his interest to contest the 2019 Presidential Election, on the platform of Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Gana  who  picked the party form after submitting his expression of interest form at the Headquarters of  the SDP in Maitama, Abuja,  said his desire to seek to contest the election into the highest political office was not motivated by  selfish interests.

He said rather,  his interest to contest the election was borne out of   desire to transform the country with his wealth of experience.

“Having consulted and affirmed by my family, local community, friends and cross-section of eminent citizens and stakeholders across the core national divides of ethnicity, religion and regions, I am convinced that this is the right time for me to offer myself for this national assignment on the platform of our great party,” he said.

“By my track record, my desire to seek to contest the election  into the highest political office of our country is not motivated by a quest for self-glorification nor aggrandizement, rather it is borne out of my patriotic zeal and conviction that with my pedigree, experience, skills and academic endowment, I can provide the requisite leadership to transform the fortunes of our people and change the trajectory of our country towards the attainment of our fullest potentials,” he added.

The presidential hopeful expressed concern about the level of insecurity  that has rendered human life brutish across the country  and sufferings of Nigerians as a result of arrested development.

He decried the attitude of the present administration, saying,

“Nigerians are becoming a hopeless race, we were full of hope before but,  government at the highest level seem unconcern, incapable, incompetent and insensitive.”

“Nigeria is facing an existential threat, the seriousness and proportion of which, have never been witnessed since the end of the Civil War,” he stressed.

Gana said anyone who wishes well for Nigeria will be worried for the country because no place in Nigeria is safe.

He further lamented that even killings are taking place in the Sokoto caliphate, adding, “this is what inspired us to think deeply about people’s wishes.”

He said: “Being a patriotic and committed democrat who has carried a burden for the rapid, effective and even development of our dear nation for decades, I am deeply concerned at the very real prospect of Nigeria imploding unless our great party comes to  the rescue with a God fearing, dynamic, untainted  and credible leadership.”

Meanwhile, responding after receiving the expression of interest form from the presidential aspirant, the Chairman of SDP, Chief Olu False, who was represented by Deputy Chairman Dr. Abdul Isaaq, said it was heart warming to receive the first SDP Presidential hopeful.

“I have known Gana as a man of character who has  exhibited problem solving attitude and  good leadership. It is a good development to have him express his interest,” he said.

He stressed that Gana’s supporters come from all parts of the country, which indicate that Nigerians must shun ethnic, religious and tribal sentiment in order to move the country forward.

Also while presenting the party form to Gana, the SDP National Secretary, Shehu Gabam  said the party will follow the appropriate procedure to ensure due process and a credible primary where the party’s presidential candidate will emerge.

The event which took place at the Headquaters of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Abuja was preceded with a democracy walk from the Maitama Amusement Park to the office.
